Leela Alaniz, Singapore, 2025

Leela Alaniz, PhD, is a Franco-Brazilian director, actress, and pedagogue. She earned her Master’s and PhD in Philosophy and Theatre from Sorbonne Nouvelle University Paris III. She is currently a full-time Lecturer in Acting and Performance at LASALLE College of the Arts, University of the Arts Singapore. With over 25 years of experience in practice and research, Dr. Alaniz has performed and directed numerous plays, toured internationally, and taught courses across the US, Europe, India, Turkey, Singapore, and South America.

Her academic research centres on Practice-as-Research, a methodology that examines evolving actor training techniques. She has developed a unique training method that merges Jerzy Grotowski’s Organic Lineage with Etienne Decroux’s Corporeal Mime, emphasizing embodiment and artistic expression. Rather than focusing solely on interpretation, her approach empowers the actor-author, the actor as a creator, placing the devising process at the core of contemporary theatre. Her research on the Dynamo-Rhythm of Etienne Decroux has been published on Mime Journal: (2013). https://scholarship.claremont.edu/mimejournal/vol24/iss1/2/

Developing an Author/Performer

This workshop is based on the methodology developed by Leela Alaniz over the past 25 years, drawing from two distinct yet complementary approaches to actor training. The first approach is rooted in Grotowski’s Organic Lineage, which explores the body’s inner impulse and its creative potential. This organic research focuses on deepening physical awareness, energy flow, and emotional embodiment.
The second approach is Étienne Decroux’s Corporeal Mime, a rigorous physical technique that trains the body as an expressive instrument. Through articulation, weight, counterweight, and dynamo-rhythm, participants develop precision, structure, and mastery over movement. Although these techniques emphasize contrasting principles, organicity vs. rigor, they converge in key areas:
Scenic presence and heightened stage awareness
Energy flow and its role in expressive movement
Mastery of movement through technical precision
Emotional awareness and embodiment
Empowering the performer as both an actor and creatorBy bridging these methodologies, the workshop fosters a unique process where performers gain autonomy, refine their craft, and develop their creative voice as author/performers.

Create with RSVP cycles*

In this master class we create theater pieces based on Anna and Laurence Halprin's RSVP cycles.

*RSVP cycles is a system of creative methodology for collaboration. It was developed by Lawrence Halprin and Anna Halprin. Lawrence Halprin presented the system in a 1969 book The RSVP Cycles: Creative Processes in the Human Environment.
The name is an initialism referring to its four components:
Resources
Anything that can be used in the process, including time, physical materials, other people, ideas, limitations etc.
Score
Instructions for the work. This can be identified along a gradient scale of being an Open or a Closed score.
Valuaction
A process of dynamically responding to the work based on values.
Performance
Setting the work in motion.

Tyrie K.Rowell, South Carolina, U.S.A. 2024

Tyrie K. Rowell is an Adjunct Professor of Technical Theatre, Technical Director, and Financial Aid Coordinator at USC Lancaster. He currently holds a Master of Fine Arts with a Performance Creation Concentration (Goddard College), and a Bachelor of Arts with Leadership Distinctions in Professional and Civic Engagement (University of South Carolina). Mr. Rowell is a theatre performing artist, that sees himself as a storyteller; where he is most focused on the creation of characters that use the body, space, and language to identify with the theatre making process.

He breathes life and truth into his work. The words on his pages are his life, and the characters he portrays whether fictional or non-fictional, are his medium. A work of art like his, cannot choose its creator; the creator chooses the work. He is drawn to politics and social justice. These inspire him to create work from the perspective of Black Americans, and how their history can be used to amplify their voices on a major stage. His work is grounded in realism, but not bound by it.

The Inner Mastery through Movement

Are you ready to feel the beat and move to the rhythm of the streets? This workshop is designed for dancers of all levels, from beginners with no prior experience to seasoned dancers looking to expand their repertoire. This immersive and dynamic workshop will be deep-rooted in connections to the community of dance.

The students will have an opportunity to create a choreography dance from movement that they have created.  This will provide the participants with a new and critical perspective on movement, but it will also explore how movement can tell a story.
